Penn Wynne Fire Co. Takes Top Prize in “Bring it On! Firefighters Challenge” PDF Print E-mail

Congratulations to the Penn Wynne – Overbrook Hills Fire Company for winning the 2007 Lower Merion Fire Department’s “Bring it On! Firefighters Challenge.”

All five Township fire companies and Narberth Borough competed on Saturday, June 2nd at The Haverford School in five fire related events: rapid dress, charge and attack, water soccer, bucket brigade and a relay/iron man competition. Penn Wynne won first place in rapid dress and water soccer, and second place in the relay/iron man competition. “The competition was extremely close, ending with a tie between Penn Wynne and last year’s winner, Belmont Hills,” stated Chas McGarvey, Chief Fire Officer.

The winner was based on the team with the better time in the relay/iron man competition “Every team that participated was a winner, because all proceeds are going to benefit worthy charities in our area,” remarked Commissioner Lance Rogers, Fire Committee Chair. “This event is a credit to our outstanding volunteer firefighters, who give of their time all year long to protect our community.”

The Firefighters Challenge offers another opportunity to raise awareness of the volunteer fire service in Lower Merion. Support from the business and residential communities is a key to keeping these volunteer fire companies operational. For more information on volunteering or making a donation, please contact the Lower Merion Township Fire Department at (610) 645- 6190.

"The volunteer system as we know it is failing," Lower Merion Commissioner Lance Rogers said by phone last week. "What we in the township want to do is keep the volunteer system in place."
